hi there, my school has a podcast and i put some of my techno tracks i created on it, our school podcast is called highlife in wilmslow and can be found on the radiowaves website. i nevwer copyrighted my music although i said i had on the podcast and now i'm concerned that someone will still be able to take my music and use it, is it copyrighted as soon as i put it on the podcast because i can prove i put it on there and the date? i would love to know if this is so, and if not how i can protect it. (can you protect music for free?) thank you for your time. kazza.

Hey Paul,

Sorry it has been so slow but I am totally swamped with work. We've got some pretty slick stuff planned for the next episode, but getting all of that setup is really slowing things down.

Hopefully within the next two weeks we'll be back on track.

Juliet,

Thanks for the compliments.

I don't know of a good Audition book, but I can definately suggest my online tutorial! I'm reworking my website right now www.walkerstudiopro.com so the sales page isn't up, but you can pick it up on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120287237019

Awesome "how to blog post". I own Audition and Audacity. Your steps really made Audition seem easy. I agree with all of your points outlined in this post. Thanks for writing a comprehensive post. I look forward to trying this next week, when I am back in the office. If you could recommend any tutorial books on Audition, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks again for such an excellent lesson.

Thanks Ken for the very informative article. Podcasting has really grown as an effective tool to touch another sensory point for the absorption of information by my subscribers. It allows the busy marketer to listen to podcasts while traveling or taking a walk in the park. I always find your information to be top notch content.

Sorry for the delay here, I didn't even see this comment in the dashboard. I've been getting so much spam here, you wouldn't believe it!

I don't use Audacity that much, and I've NEVER tried to use it to archive an LP. But I do know that Audition 3.0 has some great tools for LP archival. At least download the demo and give it a try. If it works, you can use it for 30 days for free.

You can use skype to do interviews. Skype recording can be much less complicated. <a href="http://www.powergramo.com" rel="nofollow">PowerGramo</a>
does all things automatically. Also it provides good recording quality since it
fetchs voices from within Skype directly. I have been using it for a long time.

Paul,

I follow the rule that anything you can do to 'get it right' before it hits the computer, do it! My 528E beats any of the compression that I've seen in software apps. That's not to say there isn't anything that can do a good job. Plus, I don't want to sit there and watch my computer compress a 45 minute audio clip.

Let's say you record for an hour and then you're going to edit. You either compress the whole thing so that you can hear it corrected while you edit, or you edit first and listen to it raw, then compress. I don't like either scenario.

I also like the real-time adjustment of hardware so that I can visually see, as I record, what is going on.

Ken
P.S. Your site looks good.

So is there a significant advantage to having a hardware based compressor that works before your voice is recorded vs an after production compressor such as one offered in Adobe Audition?

Thanks.

Noise reduction from LP vinyl records is difficult to accomplish completely with Audacity no matter how many layers of noise profiles are attempted. Is that as good as it gets?

Thanks!!! The intro had me rolling on the floor (almost). I fixed a few things in my config, I hope.

I think I have things figured out. Some stuff you didn't mention, that I think I figured out.
- Getting itunes feedid
- What is the RSS feed URL
- Submitting to itunes
- Submitting to the other 4 sites
- The settings used when adding the podcast to your post.

Thanks for the great info.
Check out what we have done by listening to your tutorials.

We have several more episodes "in the can" and they are much improved, audio wise, thanks to some of your other broadcast.

Hi Ken, I was away for the holiday season and came back to see you have done a program on recording on the telephone....very helpful - thanks!!!

In regard to your attempt to play/download the Wisdom demo program I noticed that all the links were broken - the host must have done something because they were all working - I fixed them now. Please try again and give me any comments. Thanks!!

And one thing I forgot to mention, sometimes I play with an enhanced podcast, so that is another format that you'll see! I encode those on my Mac in GarageBand. Maybe I should move all my encoding over there?

Jesper,

For awhile now I have been experimenting with different encoders and formats. The primary concern is compatibility with iTunes, and secondly I'm trying to get a resonable file size. Of course, it also depends on if the file is audio only, or if it is a screencast.

Now aside from that, I will say that I've been having problems with my video encoder and I've gone through some different apps experimenting with them to see what produces the best results. As of late I've tried QuickTime Pro (which is terribly slow). I think something is botched on my sysem though (as far as QT is concerned) because I'm having problems viewing QT files online, some type of plugin error.

I encoded this episode with MediaCoder which is an OpenSource encoder that allows for batches of video to be encoded. There appears, however, to be a problem with the settings there as well. I uploaded this file as a test to see if it would play on the web.

I am re-encoding right now with an application that only lets me encode at 320x240 (formatted for the iPod) and I'll reupload shortly.

Long answer, I know, but its a very tricky topic. I think I'll have to wipe my system out and start over to be sure its not an issue on my end.

Hi Ken,

I really like your podcast, but I have some questions.
Why are you switching between diffrent types of file formats? Some are in Mp3, some in mp4 and some are in m4a.
You are often refering to other pods later on when you having some problems, when are you producing those pods?
This latest pod, the one that I'm commenting, seems not to be working. Tried to download it two times but I just get this error message: "Error -50: unknown error".

Keep up the good work and tnx for this excellent blog/pod.

Hi Ken Thanks for doing the telephone program. I have been experimenting with different solutions and downloaded a Skype recording program but have not used it. I really like the idea of Audition being able to separate the Skype track and the local microphone track - this is something Cool Edit can't do. So I will be watching for Audition 3.0 when it comes out and using the Skype recording only as a backup. BTW I have completed my demo (not really a podcast) which I have produced for traditional broadcast. You can listen at www.wisdom-radio.com (check out program #2)
I am interested in any comments or suggestions.

Thanks for the show.

P.S. I notice that I had the same problem with podpress when I first installed it. But later it ran without a problem. I also notice with podpress that it doesn't alway give you the download option or the play in pop up option. I also wished the Icon was bigger some people click the headline of the title instead of the MP3 icon and wonder why it does play....I have added instructions on the end of the post to clarify.

Paul,

Extreme apologies for the delay in responding.

I listened to the podcast, from a technical standpoint, very nice, sounds like NPR. Great job.

As far as the clouds, that is done with 'Tag Clouds Settings' which you can find at http://snipurl.com/i7oj

The subtitles are actually done by an inhouse plugin that Bob made, I'm not sure what he's wanting to do with it, but I'll ask him.

We actually don't use it to its fullest yet because honestly I'm having a hard time just getting the podcast posted!

Now, with the header, I believe what you want is the alt tag. In header.php, find where the image is (probably towards the bottom) and add:

alt="Your keyword text here."

and that should do it for you, we do the same in our header, if you hover over the image, you'll see the alt text.

I hope that helps, if I find out anything from Bob on the subtitle plugin, I'll let you know.

Hi Ken, I've been listening and enjoying the podcast series since I have been setting up my own blog to offer downloads for my radio program "Wisdom". I would appreciate your comments and suggestions on the program - you can go to wisdom-radio.com/blog for a sample. I am struggling with two areas. I noticed that you have a topics line under each sho listing and a tag cloud page on your site. Could you help me with these areas of the set up - I don't understand how this should work. Secondly, I used a graphic on the header of the Wordpress Theme and therefore have no "name" and sub-head description that the search engines can see. How do I compensate for this?? Thanks and Blessings,
Paul

Well, you want to not be too close to the mic, try 8 to 10 inches, and cut the bass on the mixer's EQ for the mic channel.

When you talk about feedback, I'm assuming you're talking about through the headphones. In that case, you might want to get a set of closed headphones like AKG K240s.

I have a Mic with a behringer mixer Ub1622. My mic is a AKG s52 Dynamic mic. At times I can get a good mix of signal. But I tend to use the sequencers (Sonars) plug ins to get the right sound. The roll of on the mic is quite deep (Bassy) compared to say a shure mic. How can I deal with problem as the Roll of is from the mic and not the signal coming from the mixer. My voice is naturally quiet but boosting levels through the mixer usually ends up in feedback. more so now that I am recording in a smaller room.

Thanks for answering my questions in advance.

That is a great suggestion Paul, I'll make sure to cover that soon. In the mean time, I don't know if you're familiar with Skype, but as far as audio quality goes, if the person you're interviewing can use Skype as well, you'll get much better quality audio (depending on their mike). There are applications that will record the conversation and split the tracks, you on the left, them on the right, for example. Reliability? Well, that is another story.

I used to do interviews over the telephone but now I am having a lot of trouble getting good quality. I am using a Toneport UX2, JK Audio Quick Tap and Cool Edit Pro 2.1. I only use the guest side of the interview and I have noticed that the line quality has been very poor. I am wondering if in the day of VOIP if it is practical to depend on the telephone for broadcast quality production.

Could you do a program on recording off the phone.

Ken! Delighted to get the plug but have to point out that we're Scottish. Born and bred. No offence to our cousins across the wee stretch of water (as opposed to the bigger one!) but we are very much Scottish and do try to make it fairly obvious...

Anyway, I was delighted to get this review and to hear that you have nothing but positive things to say about our show. Unlike the CNN type stuff we've definitely not been in the business for years, but we've been thoroughly enjoying creating Coffee Break Spanish and our other podcasts (http://www.radiolingua.com) since October last year.

Yup - the humming is a known issue. We'll move it up on the list of things to fix now that we know someone else out there hears it too :)

Thanks for the kind comments about the show. We've got some more great ideas for the Sketchup Show, and will be releasing a new show in the next couple of months that will be shot in HD (The Sketchup Show is moving in that direction also).

Thanks again!
